Hydrogen water shows antioxidant properties and is therapeutic. Water that contains dissolved molecular hydrogen is one that also shows a negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP). The ORP is important for determining water quality. A solution with a negative ORP is an antioxidant.
What is Hydrogen?
Hydrogen gas has been shown to have a therapautic effect on over 70 human diseases. Hydrogen is the lightest and simplest element with the symbol H. It exists primarily as molecular hydrogen (H2) gas. It is colorless, odorless, non-metallic and tasteless. Hydrogen is the origin of life itself. It is often referred to as Hydrogen Water. It is extremely small in size, has a high lipid solubility, and diffuses easily into human mitochondria and other locations.
What is ORP?
A high positive ORP is desirable for sewage treatment, swimming pools and spas, the higher the ORP the more oxidation will occur, killing bacteria and unwanted pathogens, chlorine is added to water as it also has a high ORP, and is an effective disinfectant. Oxygen also has a high ORP, and can damage DNA and proteins. On the other hand, molecular hydrogen has a very low ORP being an antioxidant.
Normal tap water, bottled water and rain water all have positive ORP’s usually between 200-400 mV or higher. Tap water has been shown to be a weak anti-oxidant. The oral fluid of a healthy human and mother’s milk both have a negative ORP -70 mV as does freshly made fruit and vegetable juice with an ORP of -50 mV.
Drinking water is determined by national standards. ORP is not a standardised indicator. National standards require that water is oxidised and free from harmful bacteria. However, the ORP of our environment is usually on the negative side. Therefore, if thinking about health, optimal drinking water is one with a negative ORP.
Molecular hydrogen is different to antioxidants in food:
- It only scavanges the bad free radicals,
- it leaves no waste product,
- it increases our bodies own antioxidant systems,
- it is the smallest molecular, easily entering the cells (H2 weighs 2g/mole vs vitamin C weighs at 176.2 g/mol) and it is easily consumed with no additional calories.
However, it is also important to note that the product that is used to produce the negative ORP is important, and it is what carries the antioxidants into the cell. Natural products sourced from natural ingredients to create molecular hydrogen within drinking water is the best source of hydrogen water.
